How Are Magnets Used In Pumps and Motors?

A Look into the Widespread use of Magnets in Mechanics and Beyond

Since its discovery by humans dating back to the turn of the 17th century, magnetic technology has drastically shaped the world. Understanding that the Earth itself is a magnetic force, scientists, physicians, and other brilliant minds have employed the controlled use of magnets to create countless consumer products, engineering systems, breakthrough medical technologies and even modern marvels that define human innovation.

How Are Magnets Used In Pumps and Motors

Permanent magnets such as Neodymium play an integral role in electrical power steering, drive motors for hybrid and electric vehicles, instrumentation, audio technology, cordless tools and a host of items that people utilize on a daily basis. Whether you have recently picked up a shiny new electric vehicle or strummed a chord with an electric guitar pickup, magnets are, yet again, the unsung hero behind the scenes.

Propelling the Modern World with Comprehensive Magnetic Solutions

Our seemingly niche products bring forth countless widespread uses. From exact-fit machined parts to custom magnet production, Viona Magnetics is the trusted magnet supplier for automotive, industrial, medical, and alternative energy industries — and many more!

Below, we will cover some of the many uses of magnets commonly found in various pumps and motor systems. For additional reading, see our article about magnets in sensors.

When Motors Meet Electricity: Electric and Hybrid Systems

Magnets used in hybrid electric motorsHybrid engines are not anything new to the automotive world. However, their efficiency and ingenuity continue to improve as more hybrid units see the market. In recent years, fully electric vehicles (EVs) are beginning to dominate the roads in certain areas of the United States and numerous other countries, and more automobiles using hybrid or electric motor systems are anticipated to outpace traditional gasoline vehicles as the infrastructure for electric charging stations continues to develop.

To generate rotation for the motor, magnets use a powerful electrical current that passes through loops of insulated wire. This creates a magnetic field and allows the electrical energy from the current to turn into physical movement.

Many electric motors are found outside of vehicular applications. These are much smaller motors, but the basic principles behind their function remain similar.

Magnetic Drive Pumps

Magnetic Drive PumpsjpgTo mimic the function of a traditional mechanical shaft, magnetic drive pumps are used to power certain motor systems via magnetic technology. These centrifugal pumps generally consist of the “driving” magnet, the “driven” magnet and the magnet cup.

The driving magnet and driven magnet are separated by the magnet cup; this creates a static barrier between the two known as a hermetic seal, meaning that a mechanical seal is not required. Regardless of what is being pumped by the end user, magnetic drive pumps help provide zero leakage and zero emissions. They also offer higher levels of reliability and less associated maintenance, and for professionals pumping hazardous fluids, magnetic drive pumps tend to be safer than their mechanical counterparts.

The Future of Magnets for Pumps and Motors

Though magnetics has been used and well understood for centuries, it is doubtful that scientists, engineers, and innovators have reached their maximum potential. More optimistic is the idea that advanced magnetic technology will be able to sustain motors and drive systems that operate in perpetual motion, meaning that the energy of a powerful magnetic field will be sustained for many years after being set forth by an initial catalyst.

Safer commercial operations, more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation options and major advances in medical science all show great promise in the context of continued magnetic innovation.

Permanent Magnets Powering Today’s (And Tomorrow’s) Technology

Previously mentioned Neodymium magnets, as well as Alnico, Ceramic, and Samarium Cobalt magnets, have long demonstrated their value in pumps and motors. These permanent magnet types, as well as other offerings from Viona Magnetics, will continue to support countless mass-produced products and complex engineering works across many different industries.

Looking toward the future, it is our passion and commitment to continue providing high-quality magnetic solutions at the right price to support breakthrough innovations set to change and improve society as we know it.
